Torontonians asked to be aware of unsafe open-ice conditions

Wednesday, December 23, 2009

The City of Toronto reminds residents to stay off natural ice surfaces on open bodies of water because of significant safety concerns for the public and pets.

With seasonably cold temperatures this week and predicted warmer temperatures by the end of the week, Toronto Police Service Marine Unit and Toronto Water have advised that open water and Storm Water Management pond ice in Toronto is unstable and never truly safe.

The use of road salt can make its way into Toronto’s lakes, rivers, streams and ponds, which increases the instability of ice. Storm water sewers also drain into retention ponds, many of which are located in our parks, including High Park’s Grenadier Pond.

Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation division provides many safe skating opportunities for residents and visitors to Toronto, including artificial outdoor ice rinks and arenas. Residents can call 311 for the nearest location in their community, check their local FUN Guide or visit the City’s website at http://www.toronto.ca.
